On July 2nd, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with over 20 Chinese members of the United Nations Global Compact during his visit to China. The entrepreneurs from China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC) and other well-known enterprises attended the meeting. Ban Ki-moon highly commented Chinese enterprises' support to the Global Compact and their commitment to implementing Global Compact principles.
Founded by the United Nations, the Global Compact is the world's largest global corporate citizenship initiative concerned with building the social legitimacy of business and markets. Mr. Fu Chengyu, President of CNOOC had written an application to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for the membership of Global Compact. On June 26th, 2008, the UN Global Compact office replied the application and welcomed CNOOC as a new member.
Mr. Zhou Shouwei, Vice President of CNOOC, attended the meeting and made an introduction of CNOOC's efforts in sustainable development. He affirmed that CNOOC is committed to fulfilling the Global Compact's ten principles concerned with human rights, labor, environmental protection and anti-corruption, and thus making due contribution to the sustainable development of human society.
