Joining the Hope Project, CNOOC has built 4 CNOOC Hope Schools since 1997, in Tongshanzi Village and Xiaotangtougou Village of Longhua County, Wafang Village of Ruanping County and Nanshuiyu Village of Mancheng County in Hebei Province .

CNOOC has helped substantially improve the conditions in schools and bring a good number of dropouts back to schools. In addition, it established the Excellent Teacher Award and the Excellent Student Award to motivate teachers and students in schools. By the end of 2006, the company has contributed over CNY 950,000 to the four Hope Schools through cash and equipment.

In July 2003, CNOOC donated RMB 10 million to the Song Ching Ling Foundation to establish a stipend to help the financially disadvantaged college students continue education and to arouse public attention to the problem.

This project plans to grant RMB 3,000 to each of the 800 selected students in 30 colleges from 2003 to 2007. The project has been implemented smoothly adhering to the principle of being open, transparent and fair, which was well recognized and applauded by the colleges and beneficiaries. The project incorporated financial aid to encourage the development of healthy minds, sound character and the comprehensive quality of college students. At the end of 2006, CNOOC had granted RMB 9.18 million to 3,524 students.
