In 2000, ACWF launched the project Love of Mother, which aimed to aid the building of water cellars for thirsty women and children in western underdeveloped areas. To alleviate the urgent water shortage in the west, CNOOC employees responded actively and donated CNY 600, 000 within one month.

In 2002, CNOOC donated another CNY one million to the project Love of Mother. The donation helped build 1,295 water vaults and 22 small-sized water-supplying facilities in 29 villages of 14 counties in Sichuan, Hunan and Gansu Province, which benefited altogether 3,592 households with 15, 782 local residents.

In June 2004, a CNOOC team visited some villages in Yunnan and Gansu that had benefited from the donation and witnessed a significant improvement of water supplying conditions there. We realized the significance of the project Love of Mother to the improvement of the living standards of local people, as well as the value of our participation in the project.

In 2005, CNOOC again contributed CNY 1.2 million to the project, part of which was used to make donation boxes to be placed at the major supermarkets in Beijing , so as to arouse social awareness and attract more donations to the project.

Health Express is a public welfare project to provide free surgery to cataract patients in remote and poor areas. In March 2003, CNOOC started participation in the Health Express initiative. In August 2003, a CNOOC team joined the Health Express to visit the patients who receive free surgery.

In 2005, CNOOC donated another RMB 300,000 to the Health Express Project, to help enable more cataract sufferers have operations.

Besides participation in public welfare activities, CNOOC is actively involved in the natural disaster relief efforts. In 2005, natural disasters happened frequently all over the world with increasing devastation, and led to serious casualties and loss of property. CNOOC and its affiliates donated some CNY 3 million to the countries suffering from the tsunami at the beginning of the year.

On 2 September, 2005, CNOOC and all its employees donated CNY 1.6 million to the relief work in Louisiana which had been hit by Hurricane Katrina. On 5 September, CNOOC donated CNY 2 million to CSRC to assist the relief work in the Typhoon Talim affected areas in China . On 26 September, the company donated CNY 6 million in the form of cash and equipment to Hainan Province to help relief work in areas affected by Typhoon Damrey.

In July 2006, China 's southeast coastal areas were seriously hit by typhoon Billis. CNOOC immediately donated RMB 10 million to Guangdong Welfare Committee, to provide assistance to the affected in Guangdong province. A few days later, CNOOC donated another RMB10 million to China Red Cross, to provide aid to the affected areas in Hunan and Jiangxi province.

In February 2006, a mudslide occurred in Southern Philippines , resulting in mass casualty and loss of property. CNOOC Limited took a quick action and donated USD 50,000 to the Red Cross of the Philippines.

CNOOC believes that offering assistance to disaster relief in time is of critical importance. CNOOC made the donations within the shortest time after the occurrence of the disasters. It was applauded and well recognized by CSRC, which awarded CNOOC the certificate and medal of CSRC Human Service in honor of its charitable donations.
